Those who are caught up with all episodes of “The Big Bang Theory” as well as its prequel series, “Young Sheldon,” may be asking what happened to Tam Nguyen. Luckily, that missing puzzle piece will be provided in “The Big Bang Theory” season 12.
One of the struggles that the young Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) faced was making friends as he started attending high school at the age of 9. However, he had no problem connecting with his Vietnamese-American friend Tam (Ryan Phuong).
Tam appeared in several episodes of “Young Sheldon” season 1. He also helped Sheldon understand the non-science and non-academic aspects of being a high school student. The younger Sheldon started loving comic books and video games, thanks to Tam. But, after all these, the grown-up Sheldon (Jim Parsons) never mentioned Tam in all 11 seasons of “The Big Bang Theory.”
Luckily, producers of “The Big Bang Theory” are not planning to simply bury the memories of Tam forever. During a San Diego Comic-Con panel last week, it was confirmed that a grown-up version of Tam will be introduced in “The Big Bang Theory” season 12.
“The Big Bang Theory” long-time producer and writer Steve Holland said (via CinemaBlend), “There's an episode we're writing now where we're going to be introducing Tam, who is his best friend on Young Sheldon. We're going to learn what happened to them and why Sheldon's never mentioned Tam in the 11 years he's been on ‘Big Bang.’ It's going to be a bit of a mystery.”
The conception of “Young Sheldon” happened while “The Big Bang Theory” was well into season 9. So production-wise, that might explain why Tam was never mentioned by Sheldon. However, that provides writers and producer room to explore more stories about Sheldon and Tam in “The Big Bang Theory” season 12.

One of the likely reasons why Sheldon never mentioned Tam until “The Big Bang Theory” season 12 is an epic misunderstanding. Their younger selves got along so well but it can also be recalled that young Sheldon and Tam once had a big crush on the same girl, Libby. So did they have a falling out over the same reason?
There is also a possibility that Tam and Sheldon simply got fed up with each other’s personalities. In several episodes of “Young Sheldon,” there are a lot of instances where both characters have valid reasons to be annoyed with one another. But those were never big enough reasons to stop being friends. Whatever caused Sheldon and Tam to forget one another is one great story to explore in “The Big Bang Theory” season 12, which is slated to air on Monday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, following by “Young Sheldon” at 8:30 p.m. ET.
