‘The BFG’, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adventure-fantasy film, may attempt to lure in more gains for Buena Vista’s financial success at the box office. Walt Disney Company’s subsidiary is speculated to reach a total of $2.6 billion this year.
According to The News Messenger, the Walt Disney Company may continue to dominate the box office with another upcoming epic fairytale adventure following a strong 2016 start with Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Subsidiary company Buena Vista managed to gain $1 billion in total domestic earnings in just 128 days, trumping previous record holder and rival company Universal Studios.
Universal earned $2.4 billion in 2015 while Buena Vista lost out with only $2.2 billion. It may seem that Buena Vista is ready to drive the competition out of the top spot at the box office.
The studio is becoming a Hollywood mogul in its own right with popular animated films like ‘Zootopia’ and live-action adaptations such as ‘The Jungle Book’. According to The Numbers, ‘Zootopia’ earned $982.1 million at the worldwide box office against a $150 million budget – with domestic totals at $334.7 million and international totals at $647.4 million. ‘The Jungle Book’ fared a little less with $859.8 million at the worldwide box office against a $175 million budget.
Disney is also well-known for its projects with Marvel after its acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4.3 billion. It also has projects with Lucasfilms after acquiring the ‘Star Wars’ rights in 2012 for another hefty sum of $4 billion.
It was speculated that Buena Vista could earn a total of $2.6 billion this year with upcoming releases and potential blockbuster films such as ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’, ‘Finding Dory’, ‘Pete’s Dragon’, ‘The Light Between The Oceans’, ‘The Queen of Katwe’, Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’, ‘Moana’ and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’. Spielberg’s ‘The BFG’ is slated to premiere in July and is expected to draw in massive numbers for Buena Vista and Disney.
‘The BFG’ is an upcoming fantasy-adventure film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg and written for the big screen by Melissa Mathison. It is co-produced by Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer with Kathleen Kennedy, Kristie Macosko Krieger, John Madden, and Michael Siegel executive producing.
It is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 1, 2016 and stars Mark Rylance, Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, and Ruby Barnhill.
