The Tesla Model 3 is the company’s attempt at finally accessing that coveted mass consumer market and a lot is riding on it. If fans were hoping for a more futuristic dashboard, however, it seems CEO Elon Musk popped that bubble before it could get any bigger. On that note, it seems the Model 3 is also set to have better range than the critically praised Chevy Bolt, so that’s something to be excited about.
As BGR reports, there were those who were hoping to see the next generation of sci-fi consoles on the Model 3 by the time it came out. Musk stressed that even though the Model 3 is technically a new generation of electric vehicles, it will still possess the same technological capabilities as existing Model S units. This applies to everything, from the battery used to the dashboard. In fact, it seems the Model 3 might actually fall behind a bit on at least some aspects.
“Model 3 is just a smaller, more affordable version of Model S [with] less range & power & fewer features,” Musk said. “Model S has more advanced technology.”
Before potential customers start groaning, however, it’s worth noting that Musk is also saying that the Chevy Bolt will have nothing compared to the Model 3. Without actually providing specifics, the Tesla boss said hinted that it will have better range than the Chevrolet’s flagship EV, Ubergizmo reports.
Just to add context to this comparison, the Bolt has a range of 238 miles, as the EPA estimated. That’s nowhere near what the top tier Model S can achieve since those units have a range greater than 300 miles. Then again, considering that the Model 3’s range was previously estimated at 215 miles, the disparity does become obvious.
In a Tweet meant to assure a concerned user, Musk seems to be hinting that this previous number isn’t exactly final. To a post that reads “@elonmusk one more thing. Please tell me the Model 3 offers more range than the Chevy Bolt,” Musk replied, “@Mr_Ewe_Guy Oh so little faith.”
Model 3 was going to be called Model E, for obvious dumb humor reasons, but Ford sued to block it, so now it is S3X. Totally different :)
