Solar power is great but one of the biggest complaints with conventional solar panels is how ugly and conspicuous they can be. This is why a lot of homeowners are turned off by the prospect of powering their homes using solar energy. Tesla just solved this problem by turning its solar panels into nondescript rooftop accessories that are barely noticeable.
On the company’s product page, Tesla describes its solar panels has having a “Sleek, Low Profile Design” and the images featured certainly showcase that. With the absence of platforms to mount the panels on and by adding front skirts, the panels almost look like they were part of the roof from the start. The result is a clean, smooth, and non-invasive look that won’t draw the eye so easily.
Tesla also notes how the solar panels are perfectly integrated into its Powerwall battery package. These efficient energy storage units have been proven to cut energy costs substantially and when paired with an appropriate renewable energy source, can generate power almost indefinitely.
“Powerwall charges with energy produced by solar panels, making that energy available when needed, day or night,” the product page reads. “Powerwall also enables your solar panels to produce energy during grid outages.”
As Quartz points out, this new style for its product is rather out of place for a company like Tesla since it usually revels in standing out. Its bombastic reveals and eye-catching cars, for example, make it obvious that the company’s CEO Elon Musk wants the world’s attention. Then again, Musk is also known for providing consumers with exactly what they need and nondescript solar panels fit that bill.
Now, these solar panels are not to be confused with the Solar Shingles concept that Tesla revealed last year. These stylish replacements for current solar panels are not yet ready for the mass consumer market, but with Tesla, one never knows.
