T-Mobile, one of the largest mobile operators in Poland, has announced that it is now accepting bitcoins as payment method for pay-as-you-go phone top-ups. Moreover, it is offering a 20 percent bonus for those who ditch cash and credit cards. It is conducting a three-month trial with bitcoin in collaboration with Warsaw-based payments processor InPay.
The company will never actually hold any bitcoins, but instead be paid in local currency złoty by the third party processor after each transaction. Users who opt for the bitcoin payment method will receive 20 percent more talk-time credit than those who pay in cash.
For paying in bitcoin, a user has to send the required amount to T-Mobile, he/she will then receive a unique code which can be entered into their mobile phone to unlock credit. No personal information is required from the user at the point of sale.
