“Suits” season 8 premiered on July 18 in the U.S. and July 19 in the U.K. via Netflix. The legal drama continued its story without Meghan Markle (Rachel Zane) and Patrick J. Adams (Michael Ross) but introduced a new cast member to replace them.
As per E! News, former “Grey’s Anatomy” cast member Katherine Heigl joined the cast of the legal drama. She is playing as Samantha Wheeler, a new partner at Specter Litt. Her character is not exactly likable and could easily change from being the best ally to the greatest enemy of the law firm.
Episode 1 Recap – “Right Hand Man”
In “Suits” season 8's premiere telecast, Samantha had a powerful entrance when she finally arrived at Specter Litt. She immediately made her presence known but it seemed so much so that Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) was annoyed. In fact, in one scene, Specter Litt’s chief operating officer walked up to Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and fumingly said, "We need to figure out what we're gonna do about this woman.”
What’s more, it was not even a week since she set foot on the law office but Samantha already made it known to chief Robert Zane (Wendell Pierce) that she wants to move up and have her name added to the firm’s wall, and it should happen by the end of the year. Now, achieving her goal means another name change for the law office and most importantly, it puts her in tight competition with Alex Williams (Dule Hill), who has this identical deal with Harvey Specter.
Now, since Samantha and Alex were promised the same promotion but are dealing with two different bosses, will they eventually know that they are vying for the same position?
In his interview with Deadline, “Suits” creator, Aaron Korsh revealed that they will and added, “It’s going to be stages of that happening because I don’t think it’s that difficult for them each to realize that they’re rivals with each other because they’re basically in the same spot.”
What’s Next?
“Suits” season 8 episode 2 is airing on July 25 (U.S.) and July 26 (U.K.) and it is titled “Pecking Order.” Based on the preview for the next broadcast, it will be an explosive episode. As Harvey and Donna learn about Samantha’s ambitions and get a taste of her ferociousness in the process, they know that troubles are coming.
Alex will try harder to impress Robert in “Suits” season 8 episode 2 so he can go up faster, but a competitor appears and Samantha is not afraid to go head to head with him. Harvey and Robert also battle it out to show who is more suitable to head the firm, so it can be said that a bit of a civil war is in the offing.
Who Are Returning to “Suits?”
Aside from Harvey Specter, Gabriel Macht and Sarah Rafferty, some old favorites are coming back in “Suits” season 8 as well. They include Gretchen Bodinski (Aloma Wright), Sheila Sazs (Rachael Harris) and Brian Altman (Jake Epstein).
Lastly, Aaron Korsh shared that they will be introducing new characters to “Suits” season 8 and fans may see Harvey’s sister-in-law, mother, brother and Alex’s family members.
