SpaceX aborted the eighth test flight of its Starship rocket on Monday due to an unspecified issue detected during final pre-launch checks. The countdown was halted at T-minus 40 seconds, briefly resumed, but ultimately stopped at T-minus 29 seconds, forcing a scrub.
The 403-foot Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, was set to launch from SpaceX’s Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. The mission aimed to deploy four mock Starlink satellites and perform multiple reentry experiments.
This delay follows a January test flight that ended in an explosion over the Caribbean, scattering debris over the Turks and Caicos Islands and prompting a federal investigation. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated on social media that both rocket stages needed further inspection before a retry, potentially within a day or two. The company has not confirmed a new launch date, but another attempt could happen as early as Tuesday.
NASA plans to use Starship for future lunar missions, while Musk envisions it as key to colonizing Mars.
