Siri Has Several 'Spoilers' for Apple's Upcoming WWDC 2018

Apple’s annual event Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is happening in the coming weeks. Usually around this time, speculations and tips from “unnamed sources” about the products and software updates Apple will be announcing are unstoppable. And Siri is stirring up the rumor mill even more.

Reports recently discovered how Siri would respond if a curious Apple customer asks the digital assistant about the upcoming WWDC. So far, at least three different answers have been recorded and they might be hinting at upcoming updates particularly in the pipeline for Siri.

In one of Siri’s responses, the digital assistant talks about “getting a brand new voice.” Though Siri says nothing more, reports are quick to speculate that Apple might be updating the feature by adding more voice options.

On the other hand, 9To5Mac offers a different angle about Siri’s responses to all these WWDC-related questions. According to the report, asking about “WWDC” — and not specifically “WWDC 2018” — is possibly being interpreted by Siri as a request for a WWDC 2017 recap.

The same report noted that last year in WWDC, Apple did announce its plans of enhancing Siri’s voice where Apple software engineering chief Craig Federighi said, “We’ve used deep learning to create a new natural and expressive voice for Siri.”

Meanwhile, if one asks Siri about “WWDC” today, the digital assistant is also going to say, “I’m gonna have a shiny new home! Well, not really shiny, more meshy and matte…” This is obviously a reference to the HomePod. And recent reports immediately interpreted this as a hint to a new variant of the wireless speaker. But it is also important to note that HomePod was also announced during WWDC 2017. So 9To5Mac's theory applies here as well.

Whether Siri’s responses are misleading or not, it is also not surprising if Apple will actually end up announcing new voice options for the digital assistant. Several factors to consider when believing this possibility. These include Federighi’s presentation of such update last year and Google Assistant’s and Alexa’s already confirmed new voices.

WWDC 2018 happens on June 4-8 at San Jose, California.
