SHREVEPORT, La., Jan. 10, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shreveport Eye Clinic recently acquired a B-Scan ophthalmic ultrasound machine, which allows eye doctors to create ultrasound scans of the eye in order to detect damage or disease.
In keeping with their dedication to providing their patients with the best possible care, Dr. Donald E. Texada and his team of eye doctors at Shreveport Eye Clinic recently acquired a B-Scan ophthalmic ultrasound machine. This machine makes use of advanced technology to provide high resolution imaging of the orbit (the bony structure around the eye) and the retina. When the ultrasound wand is placed against the eye, it forces high frequency sound waves through the eye. Reflections of those sound waves are recorded to create a digital image of the structure of the eye, which can then be examined on a computer screen. This effectively makes it possible for eye doctors to detect even the smallest signs of eye disease inside the eye or in the space directly behind the eye that’s otherwise difficult to examine.
During a B-Scan ultrasound, which lasts approximately 15 minutes, the patient’s eye is anesthetized so he or she doesn’t feel any discomfort. A gel is then rubbed on the closed eyelid, after which the eye doctor places the ultrasound wand against the eyelid. The patient is generally asked to move the eye in different directions so the eye doctor can gain a complete image of the eye’s condition.
Some of the conditions the B-Scan device can help detect include cataracts, tumors, retinal detachment and other conditions. Symptoms may include blood in the vitreous gel that fills the interior of the eye; cancer of the retina or melanoma in other parts of the eye; foreign bodies in the eye; detachment of the retina from the back of the eye; swelling and inflammation of the eye; or damaged tissue in the orbit that surrounds and protects the eye.
“We’re very pleased to be able to offer B-Scans to our patients,” Dr. Donald E. Texada said. “We now have a non-invasive, painless yet quick and highly accurate way to diagnose a wide variety of conditions while they’re still in the early stages. That means we can work with our patients to pro-actively create treatment plans that will minimize the loss of function of their eyes. Furthermore, because the scan is so quick and accurate, we have a reliable way to monitor the progression of eye disease, which also allows us to tweak the treatment when necessary. All in all, I’m confident that the B-Scan will improve many of our patients’ vision and as a result, their quality of life.”
