Back in the day, Sega ruled the video game home console market alongside Nintendo. Unfortunately, it has since fallen behind, but the publisher still retains some excellent IPs. In a recent announcement, Sega revealed that it is offering some of its classic games for free on mobile. The offer is called Sega Forever and it offers some frankly impressive features.
Sega is not the first major brand in the video game business to go mobile, with Ubisoft and Nintendo planting their flags in the rising market as well. However, offering classic games for free, complete with neat features like progress saves and leaderboards certainly makes for an interesting case.
In the official website, Sega states that the games will span several consoles, from the Master System to the Dreamcast. The games will be released on a monthly basis, growing the library that users will have access to. Both Android and iOS devices will be able to host these titles as well and at the same time.
The new offer will launch on June 22nd, Time reports and will feature Sonic the Hedgehog as launch titles alongside four others. One of the best parts of the offer is that the games themselves will be playable offline, thus removing constraints that other mobile titles with always-online limitations place.
The games will come with ads, which is where Sega is getting its revenue, but customers can get rid of the ads by paying $2 per game. This is a much better way of handling payment options compared to when Nintendo put up a paywall on the Super Mario Run game, which prevented players from finishing the title.
Some games from the Sega lineup were actually released on mobile in some form before, but the new versions come with extra special features, Ars Technica reports. Anyone who is itching to go on a 16-bit adventure once again can do go nuts come tomorrow.
