Samsung Galaxy S23 features: Satellite connectivity that supports text and image transfers is in development

The launch of the Galaxy S23 series is only a few months away, but Samsung is reportedly still working on adding satellite connectivity to the upcoming phones. Samsung is expected to catch up with Apple and Huawei soon with a few changes in its own take on satellite-reliant communications.

In September, both Apple and Huawei introduced the first mass-produced smartphone models that can send texts and make calls without relying on cellular connections. iPhone 14 phones and the Huawei Mate 50 offer an option to send messages even in remote areas, where only satellite connectivity is available. And in a few months, Samsung is expected to catch up with its rivals.

ETNews reports that Samsung will partner with Iridium Satellite Communications to bring the technology to the Galaxy S23 lineup. The same report noted that Iridium would leverage its 66 low Earth orbit satellites to support Samsung’s devices.

The South Korean tech giant is said to have been working on this feature for the past two years. But Samsung reportedly faced technical challenges, such as resolving the size of the antenna to be used. Satellite connections will need larger antennas, but Samsung had to find a way to fit that into the frame of Galaxy S23 models that are considerably smaller than the conventional sat phones in the market.

Samsung’s version of satellite connectivity will reportedly allow users to send texts and small-sized images. While Iridium satellite services are capable of supporting voice calls as well, the report did not mention whether it will be available on Galaxy S23.

Apple has advertised the iPhone 14’s satellite capabilities as a useful tool during emergencies, so there are limitations to what messages and calls people can make over satellite. It remains to be seen how Samsung will approach the addition of this technology to the Galaxy S23. But it could be a major miss if Samsung does not deliver satellite features in its next flagships.

The Galaxy S23 lineup is expected to be unveiled in January or February 2023.
