Reducing Chest Size for Men: Surgeries Increase Dramatically, According to ISAPS Global Survey Results

NEW YORK, Sept. 20, 2016 -- Men who are burdened with enlarged breast tissue (known as gynecomastia) are choosing to improve their looks through surgery. Some men may develop fuller breast tissue in infancy or puberty from an increase in hormones. The issue usually resolves itself as hormones naturally balance, but for those who do not experience this decrease, the result can be unflattering or just bothersome. Based on global survey results, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) shows that gynecomastia procedures rank #14 worldwide, with 212,328 surgeries.

Brazil performed the most surgeries, at 26,400 or 12.4% of total procedures, while the United States ranks second with 25,545 surgeries and 12%. India comes in third with 25,091 procedures at 11.8%.

“It’s interesting to see these numbers increase. It shows us that men are more aware of the surgical options available and are making informed choices,” notes Susumu Takayanagi, MD, President of ISAPS. “We’re taking note that men are becoming more involved in their physical appearance, which translates into how physicians and practices must relate to their patients. This is good news for our members,” he states. The results are available on the ISAPS website, http://www.isaps.org, in the News section, and will be discussed at the biennial Global Congress in Kyoto, Japan, October 23–27, 2016.

This collection of information on surgical and non-surgical treatments from 2015 was tabulated from a questionnaire sent to approximately 35,000 plastic surgeons in the ISAPS database. ISAPS is the only organization that collects this type of data on a global scale and the study is viewed as a valuable resource in the field.
