Japanese multinational company Rakuten is considering launching its own cryptocurrency in Russia, TASS reported.
Earlier in February, Rakuten had announced its cryptocurrency plans when it unveiled “Rakuten Coin”, describing it as a “borderless currency.” The company operates Viber – a cross-platform instant messaging and voice over IP application launched in 2010.
In statements, Chief Executive Officer of Viber Djamel Agaoua said that Rakuten is studying Russian laws on cryptocurrencies as it plans to launch its messenger-based cryptocurrency in the country in 2019.
“Our mother company is creating Rakuten Coin: cryptocurrency, which is supported by the entire Rakuten ecosystem," Agaoua said. "This Rakuten Coin will be tradeable in Viber.”
Agaoua further said that the cryptocurrency will appear in the Viber wallet. Users will be able to exchange it for rubles, dollars, and euros.
"Very soon you'll be able to send some Rakuten Coins and to trade Rakuten Coins against rubles, dollars and euros," he said, adding that the exchange and transfers to bank accounts will depend on Russian laws.
