“Rainbow Six Siege” is the latest online shooter game that is getting a mobile version officially called “Rainbow Six Mobile.” While Ubisoft says the upcoming title is independent from the 6-year-old game, it is confirmed to feature familiar Operators and maps.
The mobile game was announced, along with a new trailer, on Wednesday. Ubisoft has so far unveiled 10 Operators -- five attackers and five defenders -- included in the “Rainbow Six Mobile” roster. And long-time fans of “Rainbow Six Siege” should be able to recognize them all.
The “Rainbow Six Mobile” attackers include Ash, Sledge, Twitch, Thermite, and Hibana. Mobile gamers will also find Caveira, Bandit, Smoke, Valkyrie, and Mute as the Defenders in the mobile game. But, like in “Siege,” these rosters will likely grow over time.
Ubisoft confirmed two “Rainbow Six Mobile” maps that have been introduced in “Siege.” The first map is Bank is set in Los Angeles, California, and it features strong defenses that would require some effort for attackers to infiltrate. The mobile game will also feature the Border map from “Siege.” As its name suggests, it is located on the border of two countries in the Middle East.
Having these two maps on “Rainbow Six Mobile” should offer a contrasting experience. While Bank offers more of a closed-quarter action, the border has more open areas. But Ubisoft confirmed the list of maps will also become longer with future updates.
A blog post released on the same day of the “Rainbow Six Mobile” announcement maintains that the game is an independent title from “Siege.” While the mobile game’s development team is also located in Ubisoft’s Montreal studio, the developers said, “We are our own unique team composed of veterans from both the AAA console and mobile game worlds.” They also noted that, despite the similar content to “Siege,” the mobile game was “built from the ground up” to deliver mobile-friendly gameplay controls and UI.
Ubisoft said in the same blog post that “Rainbow Six Mobile” has been in development for more than three years. It is then not surprising that its closed alpha test will begin just weeks after its announcement. There is no specific date provided yet for the live tests, but interested fans with Android and iOS devices can now register through this link.
