“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” is set to start production this year and fans of the original show are curious what Showtime has in store for this new spinoff series. Behind the scenes, everything points to another gripping storyline as John Logan – who created the first series – will be the show’s writer and executive producer, Den of Geek reported.
“We were so thrilled when John Logan came to us with this wildly original take on the ‘Penny Dreadful’ mythology that explores both the human spirit and the spirit world here in California. ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ promises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us,” said Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.
As its name suggests, the series will be set on the city of Los Angeles, specifically in the year 1938 prior to the explosion of World War II. “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” will explore the Mexican-American folklore during those times, as well as the unseen supernatural forces that are shaping the unfolding events.
The main character of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” will be Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto), a promising new detective in the LAPD who’s investigating a gruesome murder. Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) will be Tiago’s partner, a veteran of the force whose experience allows him to be ruthless in his endeavors.
On the supernatural side, Natalie Dormer of “Game of Thrones” will be playing Magda. This character has been described as a shapeshifting demon who is a fierce enemy and a stalwart ally. Interestingly, Rory Kinnear from the original series will be making an appearance in “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.”
Kinnear will be playing a character named Dr. Craft, the leader of an organization called German-American Bund that is tasked to keep the United States isolated from the burgeoning war brewing in Europe. It’s still unclear whether “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” will reference some of the events that took place in the original series or disregard them altogether. Hopefully, the spinoff series will provide a satisfying conclusion this time, as opposed to the original show that abruptly ended.
