The Battle Royale genre is currently the hottest trend in the video game industry with practically every major developer attempting to cash in on the market’s momentum in some way. With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds being the spark that started this crazy train’s runaway success, it seems that the developers are starting to realize that perhaps they shouldn’t be a one-note service provider. Hence, why they’re testing out something called “War Mode.”
According to a recent forum post by PUBG developers, they are currently testing out this new mode on select servers. Since the project is still quite early in its development, it’s only natural that it wouldn’t hit the wider market right now. Once it’s up and running, however, it could become available to the rest of the PUBG community.
“We’re working on a new experiment with War Mode on custom servers. It’s currently in a very early stages of development, so if you’re able to access custom games, we’re eager to have you play and let us know what you think! We’re looking into bringing War Mode to live servers as an Event Mode (but it’ll likely see changes between now and then),” the post reads.
“Custom games and servers are still limited for now, but we intend to release them more widely at some point in the coming months. We’ll let you know when it’s ready.”
As to what this mode even does, it’s basically the traditional deathmatch where players spawn into an area, try to achieve a certain goal that may or may not include killing each other a certain number of times. Unlike in the Battle Royale mode, players who get killed in War Mode respawn and get to join the fray once again. Anyone who has played any Call of Duty game in the last decade should be familiar with these mechanics.
Speaking of Battle Royale, however, it seems the Xbox One version of PUBG is getting the Miramar map soon, Engadget reports. This desert area is already available on the PC version and appears to favor sniping tactics more than anything else.
