When Apple revealed the iPhone X, the notch at the top of the display was the subject of much derision from the review community and many other sources. Samsung even made a commercial that mocked the queer design choice, depicting an Apple follower who had a haircut inspired by the notch. Unfortunately, it seems this distinctive feature was picked up by many other smartphone brands and apparently, the OnePlus 6 is going to have it too.
Of the many smartphone startups in the market, today OnePlus is exhibiting one of the fastest growth and a huge part of this is because of the excellent quality of its products. They may not be top-of-the-line such as Apple’s or Samsung’s, but they can certainly hold their own. With the upcoming OnePlus 6, the company was eager to head off any negative sentiments towards its notched design and reached out to The Verge, as a result.
The publication’s Vlad Savov was one of the loudest critics against the iPhone X notch trend among the ocean of incensed voices who had the same issues. This is why the public face of OnePlus, Carl Pei decided to contact Savov in order to explain why its upcoming flagship phone is going to have a notch. Apparently, the company sees this choice as giving more screen to users rather than supplanting it with an ugly black abomination.
Pei told Savov that the OnePlus 6’s take on the notch is a more thoughtful approach to the trend that takes care to not take away from the user’s experience. As to whether or not this actually going to be the case remains to be seen.
As CNET notes, other companies have taken an interesting route in trying to address the hatred towards the notch. Huawei, for example, allows P20 and P20 Pro users to turn on a black strip at the top of the screens to hide the notch.
