It has been nearly six years since fans of the "Mafia" video game franchise got a new mainline installment of the series. While players will still have to wait to get an all-new game.

Developer Hangar 13 and publisher 2K Games have been mum about the future of the "Mafia" franchise until this week. The developer released an interview of Hangar 13 general manager Roman Hladík and head of production and media director Tomáš Hřebíček in celebration of the series' 20th anniversary.

By the end of the interview, the developer confirmed that an all-new "Mafia" game, which many fans are calling "Mafia 4," is already in development. Hladík noted, however, that it will not be released anytime soon. "While it's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories," Hladík said.

Aside from the confirmation of the new "Mafia" game's development, Hangar 13 kept details under wraps. Considering that it is not expected to launch in a few years, the developer is unlikely to release any more information soon. But, thanks to the rumor mill, fans may already have a few insights on the upcoming title.

Months before Hangar 13's announcement, Kotaku reported last May that "Mafia 4" had already been in development under the codename "Nero." At the time, the publication said the project is still in its early phase, which lines up with Hangar 13's announcement this week.

The same report said the next main installment of the "Mafia" franchise would be a prequel. This might explain why Hangar 13 refrained from specifically calling the project "Mafia 4."

While there are no all-new titles released in recent years, fans of the franchise have seen remasters of the trilogy developed using the same (but updated) engine for "Mafia 3." However, Kotaku said Hangar 13 was planning to use Unreal Engine 5 for the development of the upcoming "Mafia" installment.
