Netflix Speed Test Service Now Has App, Free From ISP Tampering

When it comes to streaming movies or TV series via Netflix on mobile devices, high internet speeds are a must. This is why the site is launching its own speed test service app for Android and iOS devices called Fast.com, so that users will know exactly how fast their internet connection is. The service is also meant to be an alternative to sites like Speedtest.net, which can be vulnerable to tampering by internet service providers.

These days, it isn’t all the uncommon to find smartphones running at 1080p displays, Android Police notes, which means that movies being streamed are going to be transferring much more data. This inevitably leads to more demand for faster internet connections, which can be a problem if ISPs are not giving consumers the speeds that they were promised.

By launching Fast.com, Netflix is giving users the means of finding out just how fast their internet speed is and if their ISP is throttling their connection. This is not exactly an unheard of practice, particularly with the two biggest mobile carriers in the U.S.

Sites like Speedtest.net exist primarily to gauge how fast a user’s internet speed is. Any time a user notices that their internet connection is getting sluggish, they can mosey on over to the site and see just how slow the speed is. Once it’s been established that their connection really is slogging along, users can contact their internet providers to do something about it.

Unfortunately, ISPs and cellular carriers have been caught red-handed in the act of manipulating the results that users are getting from these internet speed test sites in the past, giving users a different result compared to what they are actually getting. Fast.com is meant to be the alternative that won’t be tampered with by getting the data direct from Netflix’s servers, Tech Crunch reports, thus giving users accurate internet speed readings.

Users can go to the browser version of the site or they can download the app in order to use the service. It works either way.
