Netflix has renewed the crime drama series “Narcos: Mexico” for season 2. The plot will certainly focus on catching Felix Gallardo (Diego Luna) and the future efforts to shut down his drug operations.
“Narcos: Mexico” season 2 picks up from the tragic death of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Pena). It was also made clear that the narrator, who turned out to be undercover agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy), takes on a major role as the series tackles Operation Leyenda.
Following the events in real life, Camarena was found dead in 1985. The Operation Leyenda commenced soon after that and, ultimately, narrowed down the prime suspects' list to Gallardo and a couple of his associates. However, due to his massive network of allies even within the Mexican government, Gallardo escaped arrest for a few more years. The investigations, retaliation, and search for Gallardo are what “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 will narrate.
According to reports, Gallardo was even able to quietly move to Guadalajara with his family in 1987 while still maintaining the operations of his drug empire. The crime lord was not arrested until 1989 and was later served with 37-year imprisonment. Given that Gallardo was able to evade the authorities for almost half a decade, there is a chance that “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 will conclude with him still at large.
Like the original series, “Narcos,” “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 is expected to draw its storylines from the real events that transpired in the Mexican drug war. It is also evidenced by the fact that the first season’s finale is titled “Leyenda.” It is a nod to DEA’s Operation Leyenda that took place as a response and investigation on the torture and murder of Camarena.
While an investigation with the cooperation of local Mexican authorities happens, it seems “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 will portray what will take place off-the-books. In the season 1 finale, Breslin was seen smuggling high-powered rifles into Mexico where several other undercover agents were waiting for him. They then shared a piece of paper that looked like a hit list.
Filming for “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 reportedly began in late 2018. With that, the series has enough time to return before 2019 ends.
