NZD tumbles against USD, pulls majors lower

The kiwi traded at 0.7361 in early Sydney, but slipped over the Asia morning.

The NZX halted trading on three listed dairy companies as well dairy futures and options ahead of the NZ police conference about a threat to contaminate infant formula.

Westpac notes in a report on Tuesday:

  • NZD fell to as low as 0.7277 before ending the session around 0.7300. USD had been advancing in early Syd, but the news helped spark a fresh wave of USD buying against the other majors.
  • AUD/USD traded as low as 0.7630 before pulling back to around 0.7645/50. AUD had slid throughout the session from 0.7708, with the weak business confidence report also weighing.

  • EUR started Syd morning at its high around 1.0850/60 then fell to fresh lows of 1.0785 and failed to trade back above 1.0800. USD/JPY rallied from 121.15 to trade briefly above 122 for the first time since July 2007. Gold fell to below $1160 before paring losses.
