“NCIS” season 16 episode 12 is going to be an emotional arc, especially for the leading character Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). An unexpected visit will lead him back to his hometown Stillwater, Pennsylvania.
While in the middle of an investigation, Gibbs will be visited by Army Corporal John Sydney played by guest actor Dabney Coleman. The official synopsis for “NCIS” season 16 episode 12 describes John as “an old family friend.”
However, when Sloane (Maria Bello) asked Gibbs if John is an old friend, he was quick to say no while the promo video shows the message, “Some wounds are hard to heal.” Gibbs is, in fact, visibly upset about John's visit as clearly shown in the “NCIS” season 16 episode 12 preview.
John is Gibbs’ senior which could mean that he was a family friend likely more close to his parents. Despite Gibbs being hesitant in helping John, the promo video shows the two arguing outside the Stillwater General Store — a business owned by his father until he passed away. This means that Gibbs will be later convinced that John is worth helping in spite of their bitter past bringing Gibbs back to his hometown in “NCIS” season 16 episode 12.
The synopsis also indicates John and Gibbs are going on a road trip. So Stillwater might not be the only place the duo will visit. Their mission is to find a missing military ID bracelet. It is unclear if that belongs to John but the title “The Last Link” suggests “NCIS” season 16 episode 12’s endgame will be some sort of emotional closure. Like most episodes of the show, this one will end on a good note as Gibbs is seen consoling a crying John suggesting they will bury whatever issue they might have in the past.
While Gibbs takes a trip down memory lane, the other agents will have to deal with the death of Navy Lieutenant Ross Johnson (Johnny Wactor) who dies while in NCIS protective custody. “NCIS” season 16 episode 12 will air on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
