Video game fans who are still avid players of the “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” can no longer access the title using a Mac OS-run computer due to digital rights management (DRM) restrictions.
Reports suggest that the surprising issue is caused by abandoned DRM services. The problem was first confirmed through a Reddit post by user tryingtowakeupnow, who appears to have recently bought the OS X port of “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.”
The same Reddit user explained that “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s” Mac OS port was developed by TransGaming, which supposedly added DRM restrictions. This means that the game can only be accessed with an online connection as it requires a successful contact with a server that TransGaming established. Video game developers use DRM services to prevent piracy of their products.
However, TransGaming reportedly changed its business focus in 2016 from gaming to real estate and finance. This could mean that the company’s DRM license and server for the “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” on Mac OS have already expired and left without any sort of update. This, ultimately, explains why the Reddit user could not install the game to his MacBook Pro using the normal process.
While tryingtowakeupnow also knows a fix to the issue by installing the game in the Boot Camp Windows partition within the Mac computer, he pointed out that TransGaming or Konami should be the ones providing the solution to paying customers.
“There's no reason why this game can't run in its current format for the people who bought it. There's also no one to make a patch, and users who bought this game legally are stuck having to resort to pirating a copy if they want to play it,” the Reddit user said.
It is still unclear if Konami is going to fix the issue by removing or updating the port's server or if Steam is going to allow refunds for those who have purchased the game’s Mac OS version, which was released in September 2014.
Meanwhile, “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” is currently available on the Windows PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, as well as the Xbox One through backward compatibility.
