“NCIS” is now on its 16th season and it is still considered one of the most-watched TV shows in and outside the United States. Of course, at the center of all the actions has been Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs portrayed by actor Mark Harmon.
With the foundations of the show and a lot of its major plot points revolving around Gibbs’ life, many fans would agree that it is hard to imagine the show without Harmon. So if “NCIS” will eventually be renewed for season 17, will Gibbs still be on the lead?

Technically, there is no definitive answer to that at the moment mostly because CBS has not yet announced “NCIS” season 17 yet. But it appears that several reports are positive that Mark Harmon and “NCIS” will be together for more upcoming installments after season 16.
Harmon’s tenure in the CBS police procedural has been the subject of rumors many times over the years. The fears of not seeing Gibbs in the next season of “NCIS” is nothing new to its fans, especially since they have also seen other series regulars leave the show.
Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette were both main cast members since season 1. But they have since left “NCIS” in seasons 13 and 15, respectively. So the possibility of Mark Harmon leaving cannot be entirely ruled out.
The worries of losing Harmon’s Gibbs after “NCIS” season 16 was also recently fueled with a blind item coming from TVLine. The news outlet said there are rumblings about an original cast member of a “long-running” show is leaving by the end of the current season. Other clues indicate that exiting star belongs to a show with hour-long episodes from top 5 TV networks in the U.S., which include CBS.
However, as mentioned, no one is confirmed to leave “NCIS” after season 16 including Mark Harmon. But nothing is set in stone as TVLine also revealed that Gibbs’ team will be under an immense scrutiny from the Secretary of Defense after ignoring a direct “midway through the season.”
