Madison Bumgarner staying with the Giants is one of the biggest stories in recent weeks. The renowned pitcher will be staying with the team for the next two or three months, and his tenure will be determined by how deep they’re going to run in the coming weeks.
The Giants are still gunning for a spot in the playoffs, and Madison Bumgarner is pitted to lead the team to that goal. But just when you thought that the rumor mill had died down, another pops right up that has fueled the trade talks yet again.
American sportswriter Jon Paul Morosi claims that Madison Bumgarner might test free agency this coming winter. Apparently, MadBum wants to come back home. And by home Morosi means Atlanta, Tomahawktake reported.
Turner Sports and Sirius XM Radio host Casey Stern is holding a similar sentiment, and the Braves are apparently setting up the pieces that would open up a spot for Madison Bumgarner in the roster. But there’s a catch.
The Giants might attach a Qualifying Offer to Madison Bumgarner, which means teams interested in him is going to give up a draft pick. That would certainly give pause to the parties wanting to make a play for MadBum. Having said all of that, it’s best to remain skeptical about the claims as it’s still a rumor for now.
Meanwhile, the Giants are gearing up for an uphill climb towards a playoff spot. Farhan Zaidi said that having Madison Bumgarner on the roster is a huge impact on the team as he’s more than their pitcher, he’s their leader.
“If you're an underdog, if you're a wild card, if you're eight games back in the standings or two games back in the standings. When you have a guy who has done what he's done and led the way he has led, he makes you feel like you always have a chance” Zaidi said. Madison Bumgarner appears ready to take the roll saying that he’s got a job to do and he’s dead set in seeing through it.
But while some fans have breathed a sigh of relief that their Bum is here to stay, others have criticized Zaidi. There’s no denying that Madison Bumgarner would’ve commanded a considerable price if the Giants traded him. The talks of rebuilding have been looming over the Giants for some time now, and trading MadBum would’ve given the team the essential tools to accelerate that process. But the 30-year-old stayed. That is, of course, until he becomes a free agent. By then, it’s anyone’s guess.
