“Luther” season 5 is finally dropping in a few days after being off the air for three years. Aside from its anticipated return, fans are also clamoring from the news that the series will have a movie adaptation as confirmed by Idris Elba himself. The British actor further revealed that show creator Neil Cross has already started writing the script for the movie.
“We are really advancing on getting a movie version [of the show] up on the screen,” Idris Elba said. “Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up.” What’s more, “Luther” season 5 will set-up the film, which will be quite epic given the two trailers that were released for series’ fifth installment.
The first one saw the detective getting tortured by George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) and his lackeys. Fortunately, Luther managed to break away from his bonds and got a hold of the firearm that was aimed at his head a few moments earlier. The second teaser clip for “Luther” season 5 showcased a series of investigations involving a killing spree that’s happening on the titular detective’s turf.
The trailer was dark and gripping with chilling sequences that suggests that the villain will be one of the most brutal antagonists that Luther will be facing yet. And since “Luther” season 5 will be setting up the groundwork for the film adaptation, audiences can expect the same gritty and heart-pounding story when it finally hits the big screen.
Idris Elba said that the movie will be taking some influences from “Se7en” and “Along Came A Spider,” both of which dealt with twisted murderers who turned their crimes into hair-raising games. Indeed, the latest trailer of “Luther” season 5 heavily resembles the abovementioned films with a few signature insertions from the series’ strengths.
As for when the fifth installment will be released, it’s been scheduled to drop on Jan. 1, 2019. The next three episodes of “Luther” season 5 will then followed on Jan. 2, 3 and 4.
