It can be difficult to imagine the iPhone X becoming more expensive than it is, but this just might be the case if recently leaked details turn out to be true. Reportedly, Apple has been working on iPhone X models that are bigger than the ones that are currently available. The downside is that these units are going to cost more than the $999 base price of the cheapest iPhone X in the market.
It’s worth noting that nothing has been confirmed at this point, and knowing Apple’s tendency to favor secrecy, nothing will be confirmed for a while yet. As for what sparked these new reports, it started from an image that was posted on Twitter, which seems to feature examples of iPhone X models that are of the 6.1-inch variety. It also seems to have an OLED screen instead of LCD.
One of the first publications to report on the development is U.K. site T3, which put forward the hypothesis that an even larger, 6.5-inch variety of the iPhone X, called the iPhone XL, could have an LCD screen and would be more affordable.
As Forbes points out, this is going to have several repercussions, especially to fans of the company who might have been hoping for Apple to start focusing on smaller phones again. At this point, the only unit that these customers can look forward to would be the iPhone SE gen 2.
The Cupertino firm has been sending mixed signals of late, reversing its decisions with regards to the direction it would take in developing its next iPhone X line. Originally, the focus should have been to provide customers with more budget-friendly units. But if recent reports are true, then Apple has made a U-turn on this matter.
In any case, customers who don’t really mind shelling out more cash to enjoy an iPhone X with a bigger screen have a reason to rejoice.
