LG Innotek, a Seoul-based company and a primary camera module supplier to Apple, is set to acquire an undisclosed stake in AOE Optronics, a Taiwan-based automotive lens manufacturer. This strategic move aims to bolster LG Innotek's position in the optical parts industry for vehicles and extended reality (XR) headsets.
Strategic Partnership to Expand Business Portfolios and Reduce Reliance on Apple
According to the Korea Times, the acquisition will enable the two companies to share optical technologies and broaden their business portfolios. LG Innotek, known for its optical design and process automation capabilities, will contribute its expertise to the partnership.
Meanwhile, with its proprietary material, mold processing, and precision lens manufacturing technologies, AOE Optronics will significantly supply advanced optical products, per the Korea Joongang Daily.
TG Innotek and AOE Optronics have set their sights on global automakers and XR device manufacturers. Their joint effort aims to co-develop high-quality optical products that meet the demands of these industries.
This strategic collaboration also aligns with LG Innotek's goal of expanding into new areas, such as self-driving cars and XR, diversifying its business beyond Apple.
Securing Stable Lens Supply and Optimizing Product Design
Through this investment, LG Innotek secures a stable supply of lenses, a crucial component of camera modules. Additionally, AOE Optronics' specialization in lenses for vehicle camera modules paves the way for increased supply to North American carmakers. Both companies plan to optimize product design and manufacturing processes to maximize quality and improve price competitiveness.
Moon Hyun-soo, CEO of LG Innotek, expressed the company's ambitions to expand its camera module portfolio into vehicles and XR devices. By capitalizing on its overwhelming technology, cost competitiveness, and manufacturing process capabilities, LG Innotek aims to become a technology innovation company that empowers its customers to succeed.
AOE Optronics is a subsidiary of Asia Optical (AOE) that specializes in designing and manufacturing optical products. Their expertise extends to various devices, including cameras, smartphones, and other image-related products. This specialization includes lenses specifically designed for automobile camera modules, for which AOE Optronics has seen a growing demand from North American automobile companies.
