Video game legend Hideo Kojima was at Tokyo Game Show last week to talk about his latest project “Death Stranding” and he finally deigned to share some details about the incredibly mysterious game. However, instead of enlightening the crowd, Kojima ended up muddling everyone’s minds.
There are still many things about the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive that the famous director has not divulged. During the events, though, he at least made the meaning of the title somewhat clearer, IDigitalTimes reports.
“Whales and dolphins sometimes conduct mass strandings. If they live, it’s live stranding, if they’re dead, it’s death stranding,” Kojima said. “This title refers to something from another world, stranded in our world.”
For those who haven’t seen it yet, in the preview trailer of the game, there were a lot of dead sea creatures on a beach. There were crabs, dolphins, whales, and a naked Norman Reedus. The last scene saw Reedus staring into the distance where indistinguishable figures could be seen in the sky.
Many are speculating that these beings are the beneficiaries of the title, though it doesn’t look like they are anything but alive in the video. Whether or not Kojima was talking about aliens from another planet, interdimensional creatures or something else entirely, the good director did not commit to revealing more details.
Kojima Productions, the new development studio by Kojima has also been sending out some cryptic Tweets about the game’s mechanics over the last few weeks. These include hints about a new type of co-op, which also involve the concept of “sticks and ropes.” As Cinemablend put it, this could mean some kind of cooperative play where players will need to work together seamlessly in order to accomplish certain goals.
As for the potential release date of the title, Kojima hints that it could be before the 2020 World Olympics, which gives him four years. Knowing the eccentric game director, however, that could be a conservative estimate.
