KPMG Australia Appoints John Sams as CEO Following Audit Leak Scandal

KPMG Australia Appoints John Sams as CEO Following Audit Leak Scandal.

KPMG Australia has named partner John Sams as its new chief executive officer, marking a significant leadership change as the professional services firm works to recover from an audit leak scandal that has damaged its reputation and strained relationships with clients and regulators.

The appointment, announced on Tuesday, comes just two months after the firm's previous chief executive stepped down amid the controversy. Sams previously served as KPMG Australia's chief financial officer from October 2025 before taking on the additional role of chief operating officer in June. He joins the top leadership position from the firm's commercial advisory and transactions practice, bringing extensive experience in financial management and business operations.

KPMG Australia said its board selected Sams after conducting a comprehensive recruitment process that evaluated both internal candidates from across KPMG's global network and external applicants. The firm said the review was designed to identify the strongest leader to guide the organization through a critical period of transformation and restore confidence among stakeholders.

The leadership transition follows months of intense scrutiny from the Australian government and several major corporate clients after whistleblower allegations surfaced in March. The claims accused employees of improperly using confidential information to help secure lucrative audit contracts, triggering concerns over governance, compliance, and ethical standards within the firm.

The controversy prompted a sweeping management overhaul. Former CEO Andrew Yates left the company, along with KPMG Australia's audit chief and chairman. Several senior audit partners linked to the matter also departed as the firm sought to strengthen accountability and rebuild public trust.

Sams now faces the challenge of leading KPMG Australia through a period of reform while reinforcing the firm's commitment to transparency, ethical conduct, and strong corporate governance. His appointment signals KPMG's effort to move beyond the audit leak scandal, restore credibility with regulators and clients, and reinforce confidence in its audit and advisory operations as one of Australia's leading professional services firms.
