The dreams of many nerds and science fiction fans are about to come true in a few days. A battle between giant robots is scheduled to be streamed on October 17th via Twitch. The competitors are teams from the US and Japan, arguably two of the most invested countries when it comes to giant robots. It’s worth noting that the fights had already happened, so the stream won’t be live.
The fight actually happened when the US team called MegaBots Inc. challenged the Japanese team called Suidobashi Heavy Industry back in 2015, The Verge reports. Unfortunately, arranging a battle between two gigantic machines armed with potentially lethal weaponry did not prove easy. Aside from finding the right venue, there’s also the matter of the repair time to consider.
In a video posted by the American team, it’s clear that the fight is an actual battle between actual giant robots. The clip also reveals that the robots can host human pilots, so there was also the matter of reducing the risks to human lives involved.
Unfortunately for those who are expecting epic fights like those seen in the movie Pacific Rim, however, this particular match will not feature fast-moving machines with agile attacks. The engineers told publications that, while the robots might be big, they are also slow and clumsy.
Then again, it would seem that both teams are actually hoping this won’t be a one-time thing. MegaBots Inc. is hoping for a future where better, faster giant robots will fight each other in matches akin to today’s UFC, Mashable reports. It could even become an eSports event, where fans watch as their favorite machines dismantle their opponents.
To watch the fight, the US team has prepared a Twitch page where the stream will be hosted. The steam will start at 07:00 p.m. PT.
