After months of waiting, fans finally know when exactly “Jane the Virgin” season 5 will premiere. What remains a mystery is why Michael (Brett Dier) chose to make everyone believe he was dead for years.

This is going to be the series finale, and it is also the only installment that missed its usual fall premiere. All previous seasons had an October release date. The CW recently confirmed that “Jane the Virgin” season 5 will premiere on Wednesday, March 27, at 9 p.m. ET.

“Jane the Virgin” season 5 is picking up from its biggest plot twist yet. Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and the rest of her family have already moved on from the "untimely death" of Michael. But, by the end of season 4, Rafael (Justin Baldoni) surprised her after revealing that Michael is very much alive.

Even before “Jane the Virgin” season 5, the story established how genuine Michael’s love is for Jane. It is quite unthinkable that he would willingly agree on letting Jane think he was gone for good. So, whatever the reason was, it has to be something so drastic and inevitable.

One of the exciting theories for “Jane the Virgin” season 5 suggests that Michael’s absence is related to his work as a detective. TV Insider suggests that Michael might have stumbled upon a new lead on one of his old homicide cases that was too important to ignore. However, this assumption would also mean that it was Michael who orchestrated his fake death.

For obvious reasons, the explanation why Michael was gone for several years is still under wraps. Some fans are even considering the possibility that the Michael in front of Rafael and Jane could be an imposter. This is not too far-fetched especially considering a “Jane the Virgin” season 5 teaser from no less than showrunner Jennie Urman. “[Michael’s absence is] going to be answered in the beginning of the fifth season. Rose has amazing face-swapping capabilities, as we’ve established," she previously told TVLine.

Rose a.k.a. Sin Rostro (Bridget Regan) has been the main antagonist in the series. Add that to the fact that Rafael learned about Michael through Rose; she is likely involved in the upcoming storyline for “Jane the Virgin” season 5.
