The show’s penultimate season ended with a massive plot twist. Does it hint that the original love triangle storyline will be the focus of “Jane the Virgin” season 5?
Most of the show’s first season focused on Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) absurd but much-welcome way of having a baby. Throughout the show, her love life and journey to motherhood were important elements of the entire story. But at the center of it all was the love triangle Jane is in with Michael (Brett Dier) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni). So it would not be surprising if they opt to bring back that storyline for the series’ final stint in “Jane the Virgin” season 5.
Fans were led to believe that this love triangle was done for good when Michael died from an apparent heart ailment in season 3. However, viewers were shocked (to say the least) when Jane’s former husband suddenly appeared and left all questions unanswered until the show returns for “Jane the Virgin” season 5.
Michael’s surprising return will also likely cause many complications in Jane’s current relationship in “Jane the Virgin” season 5. For one, if Michael is alive, that means she, technically, still has a husband. But she would definitely have a hard time dealing with it now that she has rekindled her love for Rafael.
Some speculate that Michael or someone else might have faked his death. If one of these plot theories actually happens, flashback scenes from the three-year time jump after Michael’s death is very likely filling the episodes of “Jane the Virgin” season 5.
Meanwhile, considering the past storylines of the show, some fans think it was not Michael but just another long-lost twin to be introduced in “Jane the Virgin” season 5. However, this has already been dismissed by showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. While refusing to confirm whether it was the real Michael or not, the show’s creator did tell Deadline, “It’s not Michael’s identical twin, I can tell you that.”
Even in other interviews, Snyder Urman decided to hang the question of whether or not it was the real Michael who appeared in the season 4 finale. This just opens up a whole lot of possibilities and reasons why it took the character years before going back to the love of his life. And, obviously, Michael’s return just made the events in “Jane the Virgin” season 5 even more unpredictable.
The CW has already confirmed that “Jane the Virgin” season 5 is going to be the show’s last installment. The series is slated to return in 2019 but an official premiere date has not been announced yet.
