Honda Motor Co. has introduced the innovative Honda E-Clutch, positioning it as the first automatic clutch control for multi-gear manual motorcycle transmissions, promising riders unparalleled convenience and control.
The Perfect Blend of Convenience and Control
After several years of efforts to develop fully automatic motorcycles, Honda has developed a remarkable "best of both worlds" E-Clutch system. According to Japan Today, this ingenious innovation allows riders to use or ignore the left lever as they please.
Honda is the only motorcycle manufacturer that continues to champion the option of fully automatic dual-clutch "DCT" transmissions for two-wheelers. With this technology, gearshifts become near-seamless, ensuring minimal interruption to the power delivery, according to a Honda press release.
For instance, while the second gear disengages, the third gear can already engage. However, this approach eliminates the need for a clutch and gear lever, as both are absent from the left handlebar and left foot.
The Honda E-Clutch utilizes electronic control technology to provide instantaneous and finely-tuned clutch control when the driving force changes, such as starting, shifting gears, and stopping. This results in a more natural riding experience compared to manual clutch operation.
Enhancing the Riding Experience
To cater to a wide range of rider preferences, Honda ensures that the clutch can still be operated like a normal manual motorcycle by gripping the clutch lever, even when the clutch is controlled electronically. This feature makes the system accessible to riders of diverse experience and skills, who can now enjoy riding with enhanced comfort.
Thanks to cutting-edge electronic control and precision engineering, the Honda E-Clutch ensures smooth starting, quick and seamless shifting of gears, and effortless stopping. This allows riders to control their motorcycles fully without manual clutch manipulation.
