Hideki Kamiya, the creative mind behind the Bayonetta series, has recently announced his departure from PlatinumGames. With this exit, his ambitious plans for the Bayonetta franchise envisioned as a nine-game saga, are likely to remain unrealized.
The Unfinished Saga of Bayonetta
Kamiya, in his latest YouTube video, shared that he originally conceived the Bayonetta series as a story spanning nine games. However, his recent departure from the developer PlatinumGames in September 2023 casts doubt on this vision ever coming to fruition. While PlatinumGames owns the Bayonetta intellectual property, Kamiya expressed regret that his complete vision might never be executed, even if the developer continues the series without him.
The Bayonetta series, which began in 2009, has seen a slow release of sequels. Bayonetta 2 followed in 2014, and the third installment, Bayonetta 3, was released in 2022. There was also a spin-off, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, released in 2023, but Kamiya's involvement in this as part of his nine-game plan remains unclear.
PlatinumGames' Future Without Kamiya
While PlatinumGames has not announced a new Bayonetta game, the series remains a fan favorite and a flagship for the developer. The company will continue its journey without Kamiya, who had been working on Project G.G., described in 2022 as a significant venture surpassing his previous works. Kamiya's departure marks the end of an era for PlatinumGames but also opens a new chapter for the studio as it moves forward without its prominent creator.
Hideki Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames leaves his grand vision for the Bayonetta series incomplete, changing the future of both the creator and the studio.
