CarterMatt recently posed an interesting question about “Hawaii Five-0's” main cast members Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams. The speculative website goes on to ask why the dynamic “Five-0” duo has never had steady relationships nor girlfriends who stick around long enough on-screen.
Any true fan of the series would know that both McGarrett and Williams have particularly complicated backstories that have made a committed love life difficult for either of them. To illustrate, Steve McGarrett's complicated relationships that barely make it on-screen can help.
Steve McGarrett is a former U.S. Navy special forces soldier and has shown to be a loyal but troubled companion to Danny Williams. While McGarrett is still supposedly dating Alicia Brown, the retired FBI profiler whose daughter McGarrett helped rescue, the character is definitely a ghost to audiences and doesn't seem to be all that present in season 8, considering that Brown and McGarrett last interacted in season 7.
In another twist, it also seems that Alicia Brown gets shafted in season 8 when in episode 20, it's not Brown that McGarrett's former love interest, Catherine Rollins, asks about, but Lynn Downey. It seems that the show's writers simply take for granted the relationships of its main stars, simply treating them as window dressing to signal that they are not single.
In a nice breakdown by StarAdvertiser, McGarrett definitely shows signs of loneliness, which influences his decision to take on Junior Reigns in “Five-0” last season 8. Even McGarrett's adoption of Eddie the Detection Dog is potentially a cry for help for the character. Fans can only speculate if season 9 will be opening up the lack of a consistent love life for McGarrett considering that no one can realistically keep the facade of stoic loneliness, considering the job that the “Five-0” have to deal with every day.
Excited fans will be glad to know that “Hawaii Five-0” season 9 will air its premiere episode on Sept. 28.
