Google and EDP Renovaveis Inaugurate Major Solar Deal in Netherlands, Advancing Renewable Energy Goals

Google LLC and Portuguese company EDP Renovaveis SA have formalized a 15-year partnership linked to a pioneering 40-MWac/50-MWdc solar portfolio in the Netherlands. This groundbreaking deal through Kronos Solar EDPR will annually generate over 49 GWh of clean energy, propelling EDPR halfway to its 2026 target of 17 GW.

EDPR's four photovoltaic (PV) solar projects are strategically located in the municipality of Smallingerland in Friesland province and in Lochem and Berkelland, both in the Gelderland province and are expected to be operational by 2024. The photovoltaic plants will include more than 85,000 bifacial solar panels, enabling the efficient and sustainable use of current resources by capturing solar radiation from both sides of the panel. The best part is that with this deal, EDPR is halfway to its goal of adding 17 GW of renewable energy by 2026.

Kronos Solar EDPR's large-scale German project pipeline is a testament to its commitment to clean energy. Their strategic expansion to the rapidly growing PPA-driven market strongly signals their progress.

By accelerating clean energy production in The Netherlands and extending their reach throughout Europe, they are driving change on a massive scale. Partnering with Google for more than a decade, Kronos Solar EDPR has already produced more than 49 GWh of clean energy annually, and with 85 thousand bifacial solar panels, their photovoltaic plants are maximizing the use of existing resources efficiently and sustainably. With a global capacity of over 17 GW expected by 2026, EDP Renewables has already secured 50% of its total capacity with this solar portfolio.

In a statement, EDPR underscored that the agreement marked a big step forward. It had already reached a significant milestone by securing half of its 17-GW goal of clean energy additions for 2026.

But this is not the first deal the renewable energy giant has secured with Google, as another one was signed in April to develop 500 MW/650 MW DC of distributed solar in the US.
