Global Geopolitical Series: Will Israel airstrike Syria again?

Since 2017 October, Israel has become a more active player in the Syrian civil war, which rages in its 7th year. The question is, whether will it be more involved or not to counter Iran’s military presence in Syria.

  • On morning 16 October 2017, according to the Israeli military, Israeli jets attacked a Syrian government anti-aircraft missile launcher after it fired on Israeli aircraft flying in the Lebanon′s airspace, close to the Syrian border, for a reconnaissance mission.
  • On early morning 2 December 2017, a military site near Al-Kiswah south of Damascus was attacked by missiles reputedly from the Israeli military. The incident was three days after followed by a report by Syria that claimed that Syrian air defense units had shot down three Israeli missiles that were targeting a military post near Damascus.
  • On 7 February 2018, Syrian state media said that Israeli warplanes attacked a military position in the Damascus countryside from Lebanese airspace, with Syrian air defenses destroying most of the missiles. It was claimed that the position contained arms depots used by Hezbollah.
  • On 9th April 2018, Israel carried out airstrikes against Tiyas air base, also known as the T-4 airbase, outside Palmyra in central Syria. The Russian defense ministry said the Israeli aircraft launched eight missiles at the base from Lebanese airspace, five of which were intercepted by Syrian air defense systems.

After this year’s stepped up attacks by Israel Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Israel against attacking Russia’s active missile defense Systems such as S-300 in Syria. However, that is unlikely to deter Israel, whose Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reportedly made it clear to President Putin that Israel won’t allow Iranian military posts to thrive under Russian defense umbrella.

On Tuesday, detailed satellite images and a map of five Syrian air bases were released to Israeli media (allegedly purposefully) which were used to field Iranian drones or cargo aircraft, as well as the names of three senior IRGC officers suspected of commanding related projects, such as Iranian missile units. These highlights in the media suggest that Israel is concerned with Iran’s involvement in Syria and would continue its guerrilla operations to minimize the threats.
