Global Geopolitical Series: Tensions rise between America and Philippines

Philippines new president Rodrigo Duterte triggered a diplomatic rift when he cursed President Obama and called him a “son of a whore”, after receiving weeks of criticism over his war on drugs, in which around 2000 people have been killed so far. In recent days, Mr. Duterte got irritated by U.S. officials, who kept on pressing him over human rights issue. Previously, Mr. Duterte indicated that Philippines isn’t a subject of the United States, but a sovereign country and indicated that the war against drugs he initiated will continue. So when Mr. Duterte was questioned by a reporter that if President Obama presses him over human rights issue, how he might respond. He said that he would swear to him and called him, “Son of a whore”.

The two men were supposed to meet in Laos but U.S. spokesperson said that the meeting has been cancelled. Mr. Duterte later apologized, saying, “I do not want to quarrel with him. He’s the most powerful president of any country on the planet”.

In a separate event, Chinese have triggered a controversy and a diplomatic rift when red carpets were rolled out for all the global leaders but Obama. So far, Barrack Obama’s final trip to Asia isn’t going so good.
