Global Geopolitical Series: Market prices 67 percent probability Italy would leave EU

The betting market is suggesting that there is almost 67 percent chance that Italy would be the country to follow the United Kingdom in leaving the European Union. With a populist right-wing government that is in a perpetual clash with the bureaucrats in Brussels, an exit looks like a very possible outcome. The new Italian government has taken a tough stance on budget and immigration and Brussels has so far failed to persuade the Italian government otherwise.

The current Italian government also enjoys a very high approval rating, which basically means that the Italian approve of the current ongoing fight with the Brussels and it also means if the current government fails in its negotiations with Brussels and calls for a referendum, Italians are likely to back an exit.

Greece is next in line as the market is betting more than 20 percent chance that it will be the next country to leave the European Union, followed by Cheech Republic and Poland (16 percent odds). The market is pricing 9 percent chance that France will be the next country to leave the European Union.
