Global Geo-political Series: US-Philippines relation improves under Trump

The relation between the Philippines and the United States looks to be improving under the new administration headed by President Donald Trump after it dipped to the lowest point decades under President Barrack Obama. President Trump invited the cursed mouthed Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House. President Duterte called the US President Barrack Obama, ‘son of a whore/bitch’ and told him to ‘go to hell’ over President Obama’s opposition to Duterte’s drug war that has so far claimed thousands of lives. In a change of rhetoric, President Trump praised Duterte for his war on drugs. He said that the Philippine leader was fighting very hard against the scourge of narcotics in his country. President trump has also vowed to fight against drug cartels in the United States and in Mexico. President Trump has recently signed an executive order to fight against a notorious gang and drug cartel known as MS-13.

Under President Obama’s watch, the Philippines, which has been an ally of the United States for decades, changed its stance against the US under President Rodrigo Duterte and inclined towards becoming an ally of China. According to the White House, President Trump has spoken to Duterte and had a very friendly conversation about the country’s concerns including North Korea. The White House added that the alliance is now heading in a very positive direction. A spokesperson for Mr. Duterte confirmed this and said that President Trump has cleared that he wants to develop a warm working relationship with Mr. Duterte.
