Global Geo-political Series: Trump-Turnbull call not gone well

According to reports surfacing today, a phone call between the US President Donald Trump and the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has not gone that well. The feud broke between the two, with regard to a refugee deal, signed by the Obama administration that would see Australia sending 1250 asylum seekers to the United States for resettlement. Australia refused to accept them and holding them to offshore detention centers in the pacific nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

The duo had a phone call on Sunday and reports surfaced that Mr. Trump has vowed to uphold the deal. However as the details of call emerged, it was reported that there were displeasures. The details of the phone call were first reported in the Washington Post. According to the reporting, Trump informed Turnbull that he had spoken to four other world leaders today, including Vladimir Putin of Russia and it was by far the worst call.

Since the White House spokesperson hasn’t commented on this, the report from the Washington Post can’t be verified. However, on Wednesday night, Mr. Trump took to twitter to criticize the deal that suggests that the talks may not have gone that well. Mr. Trump tweeted, “Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!”
