Global Geo-political Series: Chancellor Merkel pledges to fight for free trade and PAC at next week’s G20 meeting

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged to fight for free trade, international cooperation, and Paris Climate Accord (PAC) when she meets with other world leaders at the G20 summit next week. Speaking at the Bundestag, she said, “We are convinced that climate change is one of the greatest, existential challenges facing humanity……On climate change, we can’t wait to act until every last person has been convinced of the clear scientific facts. It is a mistake to believe the problems of this world can be solved with isolationism. After the US’ withdrawal from Paris climate agreement, EU is more determined than ever to make [the] deal a success.”

She, however, added that she expects that talks to be difficult, especially when the United States in in the opposition and withdrew from the Paris Climate Accord. She declared that the Paris agreement is irreversible and non-negotiable. MS. Merkel is holding a meeting in Berlin today with top leaders of the European Union to formalize a common approach at the G20.

Next week’s G20 meeting is the biggest gathering of the world leaders since Donald Trump was elected as the US President. It is also the first time President Trump is set to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin face to face.
