The latest accusations against the US President Donald Trump are nothing short of an attempted coup. Washington Post reported that President Trump shared sensitive information on ISIS given by an ally of the United States (reportedly Israel) with the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. The report called that the sharing of that particular information compromised the national security and breached the trust of the ally which shared the information in the first place but didn’t give out permission to share it with the Russians.

There are several points to note here,

• The Officials of the United States do have the right to share information on ISIS with other alliance members who are fighting the same terrorist group in the region.
• The US shares strategic information with Russia with regard to Syria every day such as bombing plans and flight plans. It is natural for the US to share information. And it is done not only with Russia but others too.
• This administration is committed to improving relations with Russia and that is been a key pledge during the election. It is also committed to jointly fight terrorism in the region.
• Even if the information was classified, the President reserves the right to declassify any information and share it with who he deems fit.

The allegation fails to indicate any criminal conduct as nothing of that sort could even be alleged. Instead, it tried to support a narrative that is at par with the allegations that President Trump has been colluding with Russia. Only illegal or criminalities that can be derived from the reports are the leaks of these types of information.

While the media has the right to press the current administration on the topic, little or no thought is given to assess the motives of these leaks which are definitely selective in nature. A strong and powerful force within the United States’ intelligence service and the administration is trying to undermine a rightfully elected government.

The United States is among the most powerful nations in the world and when a force there is trying to undermine a legitimate government then that should be one of the biggest concerns globally to understand the motives, aspirations, and the force’s view of global order.
