HORSHAM, Pa., Sept. 06, 2017 -- Grupo Bimbo announced the third annual Global Energy Race, which will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 in 38 cities around the world. Bimbo Bakeries USA, the U.S. arm of Grupo Bimbo, will host the races held in the United States. The races offer a 10K run option, certified by USA Track and Field, as well as a 5K family fun run/walk.
The race, started in 2015, was originally held in 22 cities, from Beijing to Long Beach, California. Last year, the race earned a Guinness World Records ® achievement for the most number of cities participating in the same 10K on the same day. In 2017, a total of 38 races will be held in 21 countries globally – five being held in the United States, including the newest host city: Dallas, Texas.
- Long Beach, CA (Marina Green Park ‒ 386 E. Shoreline Drive, Long Beach, CA 90802)
- Orlando, FL (Festival Park ‒ 2911 E. Robinson Street, Orlando, FL 32803)
- Philadelphia, PA (Penn’s Landing ‒ 101 S Christopher Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19106)
- Phoenix, AZ (ASU Municipal Stadium – 5999 E Van Buren Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008)
- Dallas, TX (Klyde Warren Park – 2012 Woodall Rodgers Freeway, Dallas, TX 75201)
For each kilometer completed by each participant, Bimbo Bakeries USA will donate two slices of bread to a local Feeding America food bank – one loaf of bread per completed 10K. First place male and female winners of the 10K race in each participating city will receive an all-expenses paid trip for them and a guest to run in the 2018 Global Energy Race in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
All participants will receive a Global Energy Kappa t-shirt, sling bag and towel. Everyone who finishes the race will also receive a custom medal; awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each city.
Continuing the tradition established at the 2016 race, both the t-shirts and medals will be part of a collectable series. After last year’s inaugural series featuring Beijing, this year the image will be from Rio de Janeiro.
“There is a vital role for the food industry in the endeavor of educating the general public about healthy choices and lifestyles,” said Fred Penny, president at Bimbo Bakeries USA. “The pursuit of health and well-being is no longer a trend – it has become a social imperative around the world. Small actions such as walking or running can really improve our overall quality of life.”
Grupo Bimbo promotes a healthy lifestyle obtained through a balanced diet, smart eating habits and the daily practice of physical activity. The Global Energy Race emphasizes the importance of “energy balance" among communities – meaning the energy obtained from food should be equal to the energy used or spent from moving or exercising.
Global sponsors of the race include FOX Sports, Powerade and Kappa. Local sponsors include a grocery retailer in each market.
