German Election: Poll suggests Merkel to crush Schultz

The latest round of polling is strongly suggesting that the current chancellor of Germany, Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) Angela Merkel is set to become Germany’s longest serving chancellor by winning the re-election on September 24th. Her closest opponent, Martin Schultz who surged in polls beating Chancellor Merkel in earlier this year is set to get crushed according to the latest poll.

A poll published by the German broadcaster ARD shows that 63 percent of the Germans are pleased with her work and 72 percent among that 63 percent are ready to back her as she works to ensure the well-being of the country. Overall, 49 percent of the voters said that they will vote for Mrs. Merkel.

During the European migrant crisis, when millions of refugees from predominantly Muslim countries arrived across Europe and Germany, Markel’s popularity rating declined and the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) rose to prominence and popularity. However, as she revised her open door policy and as the migrant movement died down due to border control in many Balkan states, Merkel’s popularity recovered.
