As one of the premier video game franchises on the Xbox, it’s safe to say that anything to do with Gears of War would be a big deal. Naturally, Microsoft’s announcement that Gears of War 4 would be free to play for both the PC and Xbox next week would elicit quite a bit of excitement. Aside from the fact that it’s free, it’s also a game about muscle-bound protagonists with chainsaw guns.
Now, to be clear, the game won’t be free permanently. According to the blurb that the company posted to announce the development, it will be more of a limited time trial period. Basically, from June 9 to June 15, players can download the game and play the first ten hours or the entirety of Act 1.
“Beginning on June 9th and running until June 15th, we’re offering a limited-time trial version of Gears of War 4 to download for free!” the blurb reads. “During this weekend, download the Game Trial to get 10 hours of free access to Gears of War 4 - including the full Versus and Horde experiences. Don't have time to play this weekend? Make sure to still download the Game Trial, as your 10 free hours are valid beyond the download weekend!”
There are a few things to unpack here, including the fact that the ten hours is enough to get a fair measure of the game. If the players like what they see or experience, they can even enjoy the achievements they got while playing through the trial, Kotaku reports.
Aside from the base game, the downloadable content of the game called Rise of the Horde is also set to become available to players for free. That’s a lot of promotional campaigns for the game and one that both fans and newcomers would likely appreciate.
