The trailer for “Frozen 2” is expected to come out in the next few weeks and fans of the 3D animated musical fantasy film can’t wait what’s in store for Anna (Kristen Bell), Elsa (Idina Menzel), and the rest of the franchise’s cast.
Although showrunners haven’t revealed anything about the plotline of “Frozen 2,” a lot of audiences are speculating it’s going to explore the freezing magic coursing through the veins of Elsa. This assumption is supported by yet another rumor that “Frozen 2” is going to be titled “Frozen: Strange Magic.”
The speculation is due to the fact that Disney registered several domain names linked to the purported title of “Frozen 2.” However, the company has since debunked this claim and revealed that “Strange Magic” is actually another film that’s in development under Lucasfilm Ltd.
The story explores the battle between elves, fairies, imps, and goblins with their conflict stemming from the acquisition of a potion that holds mysterious powers. But even if this isn’t the title of “Frozen 2,” some fans are still asking writers to expand more on the origin of Elsa’s magic. After all, the previous film didn’t exactly provide a backstory how exactly did Elsa come about this gift/curse.
However, diving deep into magical lore isn’t exactly the strength of the franchise and it’s likely that a backstory of Elsa’s freezing magic won’t make it on “Frozen 2.” This is doubly true since the character’s powers aren’t really defined. Apart from Elsa being able to freeze liquids and creating snow, she’s also able to produce sentient beings made of ice like Olaf (Josh Gad) and the frozen giant. She could even create and alter clothing for some reason.
Explaining all of this is going to consume much of the film’s time and will eat through the storyline that’s been the backbone of the franchise. What’s likely going to happen is that writers are going to expand the lighter side of Elsa since the first film didn’t exactly provide scenes for the character that highlight moments like that. There’s also the possibility of Elsa getting a new love interest in “Frozen 2.”
There has been a loud demand from some fans of the franchise that writers give Elsa a female love interest. Co-director and screenwriter Jennifer Lee said that she’s aware of this conversation and added that she’s still unsure where “Frozen 2” is heading in this regard. But even if Elsa turns out to be a lesbian, she won’t be the first gay Disney princess. Elsa is a queen, after all.
