French household consumption expenditure on goods decelerated slightly in November

French household consumption expenditure on goods decelerated a bit in November. Consumption expenditure came in at 0.1 percent, a slowdown from October’s 0.2 percent. Consumption of manufactured goods rose again, while energy consumption recovered.

Food consumption dropped sharply in November by 0.8 percent after rising 0.8 percent in the prior month, due to the fall in tobacco consumption, owing to the rise in prices this month, and the sharp fall in processed agri-food consumption. Fresh fruit and vegetables consumption was also falling.

Energy consumption recovered, rising 1.2 percent in November after falling 1.5 percent in October. The recovery is due to the rise in gas and electricity consumption. Moreover, refined product consumption stayed stable.

Manufactured good consumption rose again in the month, rising 0.5 percent in the month. Purchases of durable goods decelerated. Meanwhile, spending on clothing and textiles recovered and consumption of other manufactured goods rose again.

Durable good expenditure decelerated, but remained elevated by the consumption of transport equipment, especially second-hand cars purchases. Meanwhile, household durable goods consumption dropped 0.4 percent.

Expenditure on clothing and textiles recovered in November, rising 0.5 percent after it fell 0.5 percent in the prior month. Footwear sales rose after a stability in October.
