The astounding popularity of fidget spinners has been explained by proponents as being due to their ability to lessen stress. However, new reports of exploding versions of the toys that are equipped with Bluetooth speakers are coming out. As a result, these particular spinners are more likely to cause even more stress than they relieve.
As Gizmodo notes, fidget spinners have become the ultimate novelty items this year, to the dismay of those who don’t understand their appeal. Thanks to new developments coming out of Michigan and Alabama, however, it would seem that the haters now have something to feel smug about.
It would seem that the fidget spinners that are equipped with Bluetooth capabilities are exploding during charging. These spinners can be connected to smartphones in order to play music as they, well, spin around.
On a more serious note, the potential effects of this kind of issue are no joke and are certainly familiar. As many might remember last year, Samsung had to pull out its Galaxy Note 7 devices due to similar incidents. In some occasions, the devices caused massive property damage and even caused actual burns.
So far, it would seem that the damage has been limited to the spinners themselves and the area where they were placed during charging. In all of the cases, the toys were plugged into outlets. Kimberly Allums of Gardendale, Alabama was one of the mothers who witnessed her child’s fidget spinner burst into flames.
“We were about five or 10 minutes from leaving the house for the day. [My son] noticed it burst into flames and he started screaming,” Allums told WBRC. “I was downstairs and all I heard was, ‘fire, fire.’ The fidget spinner wasn’t smoking, it was in flames.”
Much of the blame for the incident is being directed at rushed manufacturing practices to cash in on a craze that’s more than likely to be short-lived. This was seen during the “hoverboard” era as well.
